Most of our customers bet only from a phone. The panel works fine on a phone, but the phone itself causes more problems than the panel ever does: a weak signal at the wrong moment, a call that pops up over the bet slip, a battery that dies in the 18th over with money still riding on the match. None of this is hard to prevent. It just needs ten minutes of setup before the toss instead of during it.
This guide is that setup. It assumes you already have an ID and can log in. If not, start with our sign up guide. If you want to install the app first, the Reddybook app page covers that, and the app troubleshooting page covers anything that goes wrong with it.
1. Your Connection: Pick One and Stick With It
In-play betting depends on two things happening fast: price updates reaching you, and your bet reaching the panel. A slow or unstable connection breaks both. You see an old price, you tap it, and by the time the bet arrives the price has moved or the market has been suspended.
Wi-Fi or mobile data?
Neither is automatically better. Good home Wi-Fi is usually the most stable option. Wi-Fi at the edge of its range, in a back bedroom or on a balcony, is often worse than a strong mobile signal. A crowded network at a cafรฉ or hostel can be slow at exactly the moment everyone is streaming the same match.
The simple test: open the panel where you plan to sit, and watch a live market for a minute. If the prices tick smoothly, the connection is fine. If they freeze and then jump, move or switch networks before the match starts, not during it.
Why switching networks mid-match is risky
Phones switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data on their own when one signal weakens. They also switch between 4G and 5G as you move around. Each switch takes a moment, and during that moment requests in progress can fail. If that request was your bet, it may not have been placed, even though you saw the slip close.
Two settings reduce this. First, if your Wi-Fi is solid, turn off the setting that lets the phone fall back to mobile data automatically (it has different names on different phones, such as "Wi-Fi assist" or "switch to mobile data"). Second, if you are on mobile data and the 5G signal where you sit is patchy, setting the phone to prefer 4G can give a steadier connection than constantly jumping between the two.
Whatever you do, check Open Bets after any bet placed during a wobble in the signal. It is the only reliable record of what actually went through.
2. Battery: Plan for the Longest Day
A T20 lasts around three and a half hours. An ODI runs most of a day. A day of Test cricket with the panel open, the screen bright and maybe a stream running will drain most phones well before stumps.
- Start full. Charge before the toss, not after the battery warning appears.
- Keep a charger or power bank within reach. If you are watching at a friend's place or at the ground, take a power bank.
- Turn the screen brightness down to what you need indoors. The screen is usually the biggest drain.
- Close apps you are not using, especially games and video apps that keep running in the background.
Be careful with battery saver. Power-saving modes save battery partly by restricting what apps and browser tabs do in the background, and by reducing how often they refresh. On a live market, that can mean prices that update late. It is better to plug the phone in than to bet with battery saver on. If you have to use it, keep the panel in the foreground while a bet is open.
3. Notifications: Clear the Screen Before the Toss
The most common accidental bet is not a misread price. It is a notification. A message banner or an incoming call slides down over the top of the screen just as your thumb comes down, and the tap lands somewhere you did not mean. Or a call takes over the whole screen while you are halfway through typing a stake.
- Turn on Do Not Disturb or a focus mode for the length of the match. Both Android and iPhone let you allow calls from favourite contacts only, so family can still reach you.
- Mute busy group chats for a few hours. Match-day groups can produce dozens of messages an over.
- Turn off pop-up banners for apps that do not matter during the match, so they arrive quietly in the notification shade instead of covering the screen.
Leave one exception: if you rely on WhatsApp to reach us about a deposit or withdrawal, keep notifications on for our chat only.
4. Protect Yourself From Your Own Thumb
Phone screens are small, and back and lay boxes sit side by side. Most mistakes we help customers with are what people call fat-finger errors: the wrong box, the wrong market, or an extra zero on the stake.
Set your stake presets
The bet slip shows preset stake buttons. Change them in your account settings to amounts you would actually bet. If your normal bet is โน200, presets of โน100, โน200, โน300 and โน500 make sense, and a preset of โน25,000 does not. If you ever tap a preset by accident, the damage is limited to an amount you were willing to bet anyway. Our ID settings guide shows where these live.
Keep bet confirmation on
If your panel offers a confirmation step or a one-click betting option, keep confirmation on and one-click off. One-click betting saves a second on a desktop with a mouse. On a phone, it removes the last chance to catch a mistake.
Read the slip, not the market
Before you press Place Bet, read three things on the slip itself: the team or selection, the colour (blue for back, pink for lay) and, for a lay, the liability figure. It takes two seconds, and it catches nearly every wrong-box tap.
One hand or two?
Bet with two hands if you can: one holding the phone and one tapping. If you are standing or holding something else, wait until you can. One-handed thumb reach is worst at the top corners of the screen, which is often where market headings and the menu sit.
5. Portrait or Landscape?
Try both before the match and pick one.
- Portrait gives taller back and lay buttons, works comfortably one-handed, and keeps the bet slip and the market on screen together. Most people find it the safer way to place bets.
- Landscape shows more markets side by side and suits scanning a match with many sessions open. The buttons become shorter and closer together, so mistakes are easier.
A sensible routine is to scan in landscape and turn the phone to portrait before you tap anything. Lock rotation once you have chosen, so the layout does not flip when you shift in your seat.
Text size matters too. If you have increased the font or display size in your phone settings, some panel layouts squeeze or overlap. If odds look cramped or cut off, try the default size for a match.
6. Data Use: What to Expect
The panel itself is light. Most of what it sends are small price updates, so a few hours of betting with no video uses a modest amount of data. Video is what changes the picture. Watching a live stream on the same phone can use many times more data than the panel, and higher stream quality uses more again.
We are not going to quote a figure, because it varies with the panel, the number of markets you keep open and the stream quality. The easy way to know your own number: check your phone's data usage screen before and after one match. If you are on a limited plan, watch on a TV or a second device and keep the phone for betting only. Our guide to watching cricket live while you bet explains a two-screen setup.
7. Browser or App on Match Day?
Both work. The important thing on match day is not which one you use but that you use a proper one. Open the panel in Chrome or Safari, or in the app we sent you, not inside the browser built into WhatsApp, Instagram or Telegram. Those in-app browsers lose logins, block some page features and close when you switch apps.
If you use a home-screen shortcut, open it once before the match to make sure the link still works. Links change from time to time, and finding out at the toss is the worst time. If it fails, message us for the current link. The full comparison of app and browser is on the Reddybook app page.
The 10-Point Pre-Match Phone Checklist
- Battery charged, with a charger or power bank in reach.
- Connection chosen and tested by watching a live market for a minute.
- Automatic network switching off if your Wi-Fi is solid.
- Battery saver off, or the phone plugged in.
- Do Not Disturb or a focus mode on, with calls allowed from favourites only.
- Busy group chats muted.
- Panel open in Chrome, Safari or the app, not an in-app browser, and the link checked.
- Stake presets set to amounts you actually bet. Bet confirmation on.
- Screen orientation chosen and rotation locked.
- Your budget for the match decided before the first ball, not during it.
The last point is the one that matters most. A well set-up phone makes betting smoother, which also makes it easier to bet more than you meant to. Decide your limit first. Our responsible gaming page has a simple way to set one.
If Your Phone Dies With Bets Open
This happens to almost everyone once. The important thing to know is that your bets live on the panel, not on your phone.
- Matched bets stand. Anything matched before the phone went off stays on your account and settles at the end of the market as normal, whether or not you are watching.
- Unmatched bets also stay open. They can still be matched while you are offline, if the price comes to them. If you cannot get back online quickly, this is the main risk. A lay sitting unmatched can be matched later when the match has turned.
- A bet that was pending at the moment of failure may or may not have gone through. Do not place it again until you have checked.
When you are back, log in from any device. A laptop or a family member's phone works, as long as you log out afterwards. Open Open Bets first. Cancel any unmatched bet you no longer want, then check the account statement for anything settled while you were away. If something looks wrong or missing, screenshot it and send it to us on WhatsApp with your user ID, and we will check it with the panel.
One habit makes this much less stressful: do not leave large unmatched bets sitting in the market when your battery is low or your signal is shaky. If you might lose your connection, cancel what is unmatched first.
